FOCUS ON THE LONG RUN WITH NADIA

Run towards a marathon. It’s more than a race. It’s a physical and emotional transformation, hear it from someone who knows, LA running coach and 130 times marathon runner Nadia Ruiz.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO KEEP RUNNING?

I still connect with the motivation that got me running in the first place. I always wanted to prove myself. At the age of 14 I ran my first marathon, with my Dad at my side, it gave me that sense of ‘I can do it’. That feeling still motivates me to run.

WHY SHOULD ANYONE RUN A MARATHON?
It’s a great goal. It’s more than the marathon, it’s a transformative journey. You will grow as you push through the tough moments. It’s an emotional journey too, the race becomes a celebration of your training and the commitment you made to yourself.

“It’s a friendship, it’s an internal journey, it’s a physical and emotional transformation.”

HOW MUCH TIME AND COMMITMENT WILL IT TAKE?

If someone wants to go from couch to marathon, I’d recommend giving it 6 to 8 months – first establishing a routine of three runs a week, then steadily building up the mileage. It’s a longer-term commitment.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING IMPROVES YOUR RUNNING?

I strongly believe in cross-training. I swim, I cycle and just started rock-climbing. I love variety in fitness, it’s good to try something new and if you don’t run every day you really look forward to it.

“that reason why will… get you out of the door to enjoy every single mile.”

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO FOCUS ON MARATHON TRAINING?

Have a goal that means something to you. Ask yourself ‘why is this important to me?’, because when you connect with your reason why, it will get you through the ups and downs, it will remind you who you’re doing it for and keep you committed.
